Pro-russian blogger Anatoly Shariy, suspected of treason by the SSU, has been detained in Spain. The SSU announced this on their Facebook page.

Shariy was detained by Spanish authorities on May 4.

According to the SSU, this became possible due to the close cooperation of the Ukrainian special services with the Prosecutor General's Office, the international partners, and by means of a multi-level special operation of Ukrainian law enforcement officers.

"This detention is another proof that every traitor of Ukraine will sooner or later receive a well-deserved punishment, this is inevitable," the SSU said.

We remind that the SSU suspects Anatoly Shariy of committing crimes provided by two articles of the Criminal code of Ukraine: Art. 111 ("Treason") and Art. 161 ("Violation of equality of citizens based on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability, and other grounds").

According to SSU investigators, he conducted illegal activities to the detriment of Ukraine's national security in the information sphere. There are grounds to believe, the SSU notes, that Shariy was acting on behalf of foreign structures.

"Evidence of the investigation is confirmed by a number of expert studies, which established that the interviews and speeches of A. Shariy constitute subversive activities against Ukraine. Last year he was declared a suspect," the SBU said.

All necessary investigative and operational measures are underway to make this person legally accountable for his actions.

As IMI reported, on February 16, 2021, the SSU notified Ukrainian citizen Anatoliy Shariy of suspicion for committing a crime under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – Part 1 of Art. 111 ("Treason") and Part 1 of Art. 161 ("Violation of equality of citizens based on their race, nationality, religious beliefs, disability, and other grounds"). Shariy was summoned to the SSU for questioning on February 22, and on February 25, the SSU declared him wanted by the state.

On March 1, 2021, the SSU sent requests for international legal assistance and the necessary materials to organize and conduct investigative actions in other countries during the criminal proceedings against Shariy to the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office.

On August 21, 2021, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy put into effect the National Security and Defense Council's decision to impose sanctions on the Shariy couple – Anatoliy and Olga – and the editor-in-chief of Strana.ua Ihor Guzhva.

On February 16, 2022, Zelensky expanded sanctions against propagandist Anatoliy Shariy and Strana's editor-in-chief Igor Guzhva. Now the sanctions apply to their other websites.
