Unknown men beat journalist in Donetsk region

21.09.2017, 17:43
On |September 14, in the city of Dobropillia (Donetska oblast), three unidentified  men have beaten the journalist of the online media outlet “Zakon i Kontrol” and blogger Taras Khaliava. This was reported by the TV channel “DoTeBe” (Donetsk regional directorate of the National Public Television of Ukraine). The incident took place at night, near the journalist's home. Three men ambushed the journalist when he was alone, and attacked him, hitting with iron bars even when he was on the ground. Taras was saved by his bicycle helmet, as he was hit in the head with an iron bar. As the journalist started yelling for help, his neighbors ran out. and the attackers escaped using an old car with only one working headlight. As the TV channel reported, the blogger covers violations of laws that a common citizen comes across often (like rude attitude of police officers, security guards, limitation of access to water resources, cheatings and schemes at car fuelling stations) on his Youtube channel. The joournalist, however, is not sure what exactly might have caused the assault. The attackers did not take anything from him and did not threaten. As Taras Khaliava explained, during his work and activism he made many enemies due to his intolerance to any violations of laws.   The journalist went through official examination of his injuries and filed an official complaint to the police. In his comment for IMI he said that the attack was definitely due to his professional journalist activities. The local police opened criminal case based on part 2 of article 125 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (“Causing intentional light injury”).
