On September 20, in the airport “Kyiv” (formerly known as “Zhuliany”), the citizen of Uzbekistan was detained, journalist Narzullo Akhunzhonov, together with his wife and five minor children. This was reported by the Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Union in their Facebook account.
Based on the information of advocates, Akhunzhonov came from turkey where he had a refugee status. Yet due to an assassination attempt against him and constant harassments against his family members, he decided to leave this country.
“In the process of document check-up, it turned out that the citizen of Uzbekistan is wanted by Interpol. The reason is the case of 2009 on fraud for amount of USD 2000. Yet the real reason is his professional journalist activities. Akhunzhonov was publishing articles about the crimes commited by authorities in his native country”, the Helsinki Human Rights Union commented.
In the airport, у приміщенні аеропорту, Akhunzhonov applied for refugee status, as he had all necessary documents. The status of this application is now unknown.
According to the Union, Akhunzhonov is now in temporary detention facility and is awaiting for court judgment. The issue of his extradition to Uzbekistan is being considered.
