21.07.2021, 12:05

Six Ukrainian TV channels violated the law on official language, screening films and TV series in Russian. These are the results of the monitoring of the activities of 28 TV and radio organizations, which was conducted on July 16-17 by the Secretariat of the Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, according to the Facebook page of the language ombudsman.

Thus, violations of the language law were revealed on Inter, Ukraine, ICTV, Mega, NTN, K1 TV channels, and relevant reports were drawn up.

On the TV channel "Inter" six violations were recorded (program "Investigation was conducted"; program "Material evidence". Special case "; animated film " Fox and hare "; fiction " Guest from the future "; fiction " Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson "; TV series " Taisiya ").

"Ukraine": five violations (fiction "Error letter"; TV series "Nima"; fiction "Not forgotten one"; TV series "Mavericks"; TV series "House of Hope")

"Mega" : two violations (TV series "Mystical Ukraine"; TV series "Secret Territories").

ICTV : two violations (t / s "Secret Doors"; t / s "For three").

K1 and NTN : one violation each.

According to the ombudsman, no violations of the law on the language of film screenings were found on other TV channels.

The Ombudsman Taras Kremin sent a letter to the National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting with a request to apply the sanctions specified by law to the mentioned television and radio organizations.

The Ombudsman also appealed to TV channels regarding the need to strictly comply with the provisions of part six of Article 23 of the Law and to ensure that films (in particular, TV series and their individual series) are screened in the official language.

As IMI reported, on July 16, parts two and six, eight of Article 23 of the Law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as Official Language” came into force, which regulates the use of the state language in culture, entertainment, tourism, book publishing and bookstores, film production in cinemas and on television.

On July 16, 2019, the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” came into force in Ukraine. On April 25, 2019, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law in essence.

According to the document, the only national (official) language in Ukraine is Ukrainian, its status as the only state language is determined by the state-building self-determination of the Ukrainian nation. This law also regulates the functioning and use of the Ukrainian language as the official language in the spheres of public life throughout Ukraine.

On July 14, 2021, the Constitutional Court of Ukraine ruled the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language” constitutional.
