19.02.2018, 18:24
On February 17 in Rivne, hosting provider that hosted Rivne and Volyn analytical portal "Chetverta vlada" was attacked by burglars. The website of the media outlet is currently unavailable. This information was published in Facebook entry , and confirmed for “Konkurent" by the editor-in-chief of the media outlet, Volodymyr Torbich. “Unfortunately, the hoster who reported that does make backups, now reports that the backups were on the servers in the same room. As far as I know, this provider also hosted some other information web-sites of Rivne. I think that it was not merely a theft, but also criminal obstruction to journalist activities”, Torbich commented. He thinks that there are many wealthy people who could wish many of the materials in question disappeared. Також, пише видання, постраждав сайт “Рівне 1”. Він теж недоступний. In the comment for IMI, vice-head of the media outlet “Chetverta vlada” Antonina Torbich said that the administration is not sure that the theft was related to professional activities of the media outlet. In her comment for IMI, expert of the Digital Security Lab Iryna Chulivska advices Ukrainian media outlets to consider the security issues of their websites ahead, and to make timely backups. “Was it an obstruction to journalist activities, or just theft - hard to tell, but I would not count on return of the servers with information - most likely, "Chetverta Vlada" lost them for good. For Ukrainian online media outlets, especially for investigations projects, it is not recommended to Use Ukrainian hostings due to the threat that the servers can be seized by law enforcement agents. In any case, whatever hosting you use, a correctly made backup is an important thing to have. If "Chetverta Vlada" had it - they could restore their website quickly and without problems”, Iryna Chulivska said.
