Ivan Kapsamun, a journalist and public relations officer in the Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrohradskyi Marine Brigade (separate marine brigade No. 35), born in Vynohradivka (Kurchu) village in Odesa oblast, resumed his work in journalism in August 2025, two years after being wounded in the line of duty. He was the politics editor with the newspaper Den before the full-scale invasion.

The treatment and rehabilitation lasted for over two years, the journalist told the IMI representative in Odesa oblast. Ivan says he went through more than 15 general and spinal anesthesias during this period.

“It was not an easy path, but, thank God, I passed it. I want to thank the doctors who saved my limbs and put me back on my feet, as well as my wife, children, family, and everyone who was there for me. As of today I have more or less recovered, physically and mentally, and I am ready for a new era in my life,” the journalist said.

He plans to take up active public work. Ivan Kapsamun has already begun contributing to Ukrainian and Moldovan media outlets. On 26 August, he presented an analytical article “Operation ‘Capture’. How Russia seeks to win back control over Moldova through parliamentary elections”, focusing on the Kremlin’s hybrid war against Moldova coming up on the 28 September parliamentary election.

Ivan also maintains an active presence on Facebook and has received offers to join TV channels as a politics analyst.

Ivan Kapsamun was severely wounded in the line of duty in Ukraine’s South on 14 July 2023. He was escorting a crew of Ukrainian journalists in the liberated territories when the car they were traveling in hit an anti-tank mine. The explosion left the officer with multiple fractures and burns to his legs.

IMI reported in early 2024 that Ivan Kapsamun had stood on his feet for the first time since his injury, but still had more surgeries and a long rehabilitation ahead of him.
