Policeman suspected of arson of Radio Liberty journalist car to be fired

The main directorate of the National Police in Lviv region conducts internal investigation as to a police officer involved in arson of Lviv journalist's car. His eventual dismissal from the police is to be decided. The main directorate of the National Police in Lviv region reported it on its website.

As the chief of Lviv police Vasyl Vikonsky said the police was to probe into involvement of the police officer in that crime.

“I have ordered an inquiry into this fact and I want to thank the employees of the office of public prosecutor in Lviv region, the administration of the Security Service of Ukraine for helping to expose the malefactor in our ranks. We will assist to the fullest extent possible in establishing all circumstances of involvement of the police officer in the crime. There can be no indulgence here. My position is unambiguous: as the police investigation will be completed, the police officer will be dismissed, ” as Vasyl Vikonsky said.

As IMI reported, on January 30, in Lviv some unknown person set fire to the car belonging to Radio Svoboda journalist Halyna Tereshchuk.

According to the main line of inquiry, the crime was committed due to journalistic professional activity of Halyna Tereshchuk, as Vasyl Vasko, head of the investigative department of Halytsky district police.

.The police instituted criminal proceedings under Part 2 of Art. 347-1 (“Deliberate destruction or damage to journalist's property”) of the Criminal Code.

On February 6, the SBU reported that in Odessa, the law enforcers detained a resident of the Khmelnytsky region, who, according to investigators, set fire to the car.
