Internet freedom in Ukraine improved over the past year. Ukrainians made greater use of the internet to organise protests, and the speed and quality of connection improved despite damage to infrastructure, ZMINA writes, citing a report by Freedom House.

Ukraine remains in the “partly free” group in terms of internet freedom, ranking 64th out of 100 countries. Ukraine stood at 62 in the last year’s ranking and at 59 in 2024.

“Internet freedom in Ukraine improved slightly during the coverage period. Mobile internet speeds increased despite the persistent damage inflicted on the country’s internet infrastructure by Russian forces,” the report reads.

Ukraine earned a point for the speed and quality of internet connection. The score for another indicator also rose from 5 to 6 points: internet users were able to speak out in support of particular causes and organise protests, e.g. in defence of the country’s anti-corruption bodies.

The overall level of internet freedom worldwide has been on the decline for the past 15 years, the Freedom House report states. The worst levels of internet freedom were recorded in Iran, Russia, China, Cuba, and Myanmar. Authoritarian regimes have stepped up efforts to isolate their populations from the global internet, the observers remarked. Estonia ranked first in terms of internet freedom.
