For students of Media School 2.0, organized by the the Institute of Mass Information (IMI) journalism hub Mediabaza Kropyvnytskyi, a new stage of the program has begun: seven participants have started internships in Kirovohradska oblast media outlets.

During the training stage, the participants were learning and honing their practical skills under the guidance of experienced editors and journalists. Media School aims to attract young people to work in the media field and helps them not only master the basics of the profession, but also develop the skills for creating high-quality content in various formats, working with registers and databases.

Media School is a most interesting project. And I am very glad that I took part in it. To meet editors, hear about their experience, see professional journalists who approach the problems they face every day with humor. It was valuable to attend classes together with people of different experience, from other university majors and even of completely different ages,” says Iryna Berher, a Media School participant.

The internship will allow participants to immerse themselves in the work of editorial offices, experience the dynamics of journalism while receiving renumeration for their work. Editors of media outlets that have expressed interest in involving interns in their work will be able to help expand the knowledge and skills mastered at the Media School and attract new people to the team.

The following media outlets offer internships:

  • news portal Hrechka;
  • online media outlet Persha Elektronna Hazeta;
  • Central Ukrainian News Bureau CBN;
  • online media outlet Bez Kupyur;
  • online media outlet Tochka Dostupu;
  • newspaper Kirovohradska Pravda.

“Paid internships for young people are a cool thing for the media, seeing as we don’t have the resources to financially encourage interns. Lia is currently working on a very cool article about the history of our building. This article will help us transform the newspaper in the future. That’s why the Media School was really important for us, because thanks to the support of Mediabaza Kropyvnytskyi I have the opportunity to bring change to the newspaper,” says Kirovohradska Pravda editor Olena Sidorova about the benefits of involvement in the Media School.

“A few weeks have passed since the end of the course. And I am collecting information for my first article in the newspaper. During this time, I was allowed into a closed museum, I flipped through 19th century archives and talked to people I would never have met otherwise. Is this interesting? Incredibly fascinating! The biggest lesson learned during this time: don’t go to the archive without a mask if you’re working with old material. And don’t go to the editorial office in heels. Because for some reason everywhere has stairs that could kill you (laughs),” says Liya Ivanovska, a participant in the program.

“I am doing an internship at the news portal Hrechka. The editors are great, they help me with everything. Today I wrote for the permanent column Top 10 Films About the War, tomorrow I will go to do a social survey. I am grateful for this opportunity”, says Diana Bondarenko, a student of the Vynnychenko State University of Central Ukraine, about the behind the scenes of the internship.

“I am doing an internship at Tochka Dostupu. On Saturday, I took comments and did a little filming at an event. I wrote an article, although I was more of an information collector, since what I wrote saw a lot of revisions. I also worked a little in the office,” says Ulyana Skorokhod, a Vynnychenko State University of Central Ukraine student.

Media School 2.0 was launched by the IMI journalism hub Mediabaza Kropyvnytskyi in October 2024 and consisted of 10 sessions. The project was attended by young people interested in working in the media, as well as students from local universities.
