The website of the Kharkiv-based news outlet Gwara was attacked by hackers on 12 August. Opening the website now displays a shop listing for a camera in Japanese instead of the publication’s usual content, chief editor Serhiy Prokopenko reported.
In a comment to the Institute of Mass Information’s regional representative Yuliya Napolska, he said that problems with the website’s operation began at 1pm. First, they saw the 404 error (Not Found) and received notifications of pages being edited in the website’s admin panel.
The newsroom immediately contacted the IT company that maintains the site. Specialists are now working to restore it.
Serhiy Prokopenko says that the website’s core system and plugins had been updated just a week earlier. The team runs such updates regularly to improve the website’s security.
As of the time of publication, the website had still not been restored.
IMI has reported earlier that the website of the Kharkiv-based news outlet Nakypilo was targeted by hackers.
