Competent authorities are investigating into NBC journalist illegally visiting Crimea – MFA
Competent authorities are investigating the circumstances of the NBC journalist illegally visiting Crimea. Further steps will be determined based on the findings of the inspection.
This was reported by the spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Oleh Nikolenko.
He reminded that crossing the border to the temporarily occupied Crimea from the side of Russia is a violation of Ukrainian law.
"Perpetrators will be held legally accountable. Namely, foreign citizens may be banned from entering Ukraine for such actions," Oleh Nikolenko emphasized.
As IMI reported, on February 28, the American NBC published a report from Crimea, which has been annexed by Russia, stating clearly that the journalists had arrived to the peninsula in violation of Ukrainian law, via the Crimean Bridge.
The authors of the NBC report claim that most of the people they talked to in Crimea call it Russian land. Although the channel mentions the suppression of freedom of speech on the peninsula and claims that even before the annexation in 2014, the population there was "more pro-Moscow than in the rest of Ukraine."
On January 15, 2023, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, signed into effect the National Security and Defense Council's decision on imposing sanctions against several people, including Russian propagandist Boris Korchevnikov, for 10 years. On October 19, 2020, the State Border Service of Ukraine banned Korchevnikov from entering the country for three years due to his illegal visit to Crimea, which is under temporary Russian occupation.
