Twice as much of jeansa at parliamentary campaign than at presidential election - IMI monitoring

18.07.2019, 12:41
During this parliamentary election campaign, the percent of materials with signs of an order more than doubled compared to the presidential campaign. Thus, during the three monitoring waves (5 days each, a total of 15 days), during the presidential campaign, 414 items with order signs were recorded, and for the same period of the parliamentary campaign, there were already 849 materials of the kind. These are the results of three monitoring waves conducted by the Institute of Mass Information NGOs during June and July 2019, with a total sample of over 40,000 materials in 13 online media. In a whole, only 3.5% of the total number of materials with signs of a political order were marked as advertising. However, this labeling also did not comply with the Law of Ukraine "On Advertising" (headings "Relevant", "Company News", "Elections", etc.). The most materials with order signs being paid-for ones were identified on the 112th channel site; 249 materials for 15 days of the monitoring. The most part of commissioned stories on the site were recorded during the second wave of monitoring : 98 materials with signs of order for five days of the survey. Most actively this news resource backed the political party "Opposition Platform - For Life". 115 materials with signs of being ordered for three waves of monitoring were recorded on the website "Obozrevatel". On this media resource, the number of commissioned materials has increased significantly during the third wave of monitoring (3 wave 08 - 12 July 2019). There was no clear favorite, which had been appearing in most part of the made-to-order stories in "Obozrevatel", the mass media supported both Yulia Tymoshenko and Petro Poroshenko, and the Opposition bloc, and Anatoly Gritsenko. During the three monitoring waves on the site of Znay.ua, 114 materials were identified as such that had signs of being made-to-order. And if the first two waves of this website were particularly active in supporting President Volodymyr Zelensky, during the third wave Znay.ua beside of Zeelensky, they supported as well “Opposition Platform - For Life". The most part of materials with signs of being paid-for on the website were detected during the second monitoring wave. Almost the same number of jeansa as "Obozrevatel" and Znay.ua had, were revealed on the website of the channel NewsOne. Through three waves of monitoring, there were identified 111 materials with signs of being political order. Above all, this website provided its support to the party which would-be associated to the owners of this mass media, "Opposition Platform - For Life". During this election campaign, there were no identified materials with sings of political order on the websites of “Ukrayinska Pravda”, Liga and “Novoe vremya”. This analysis is based on the results of 3 waves of monitoring (1st wave: June, 03-07, 2019, 2nd wave: June, 24-28, 2019, 3rd wave; July, 08-12, 2019), held in such media: "Obozrevatel", "Znay. ua ", Channel 24, Gordon, “Ukrainska Pravda”, “Novoe Vremya”, UNIAN, "Segodnya ", TSN, 112.ua, NewsOne, RBC.ua," Liga". The sample covered all the news in a row that were published on the websites during the specified period (more than 40 thousand news). This study was made possible through the support of the American people, which was provided through the USAID "Media Program in Ukraine" project implemented by the international organization Internews Network. The content of the materials is exclusively under responsibility of the "Institute of Mass Information" NGO and does not necessarily reflect the views of USAID, the US government and the Internews Network.
