Ukrainian news outlets mostly integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into their work for limited use or ancillary tasks in 2025, as evidenced by the survey of journalists conducted by the Institute of Mass Information.*

Over a half of respondents (56%) said that they used artificial intelligence tools moderately, mostly for individual ancillary tasks and process automatisation.

13% of news outlets reported very active use of AI, in particular to generate content.

Another 20% of respondents reported minimal use of AI, by individual employees, without systematic integration into the news outlet’s work.

9% of news outlets said that they did not use artificial intelligence at all, and 2% planned to integrate it but lacked the necessary skills or tools.

The survey suggests that despite the growing interest in AI technologies, Ukrainian media mostly approached it cautiously in 2025, viewing AI primarily as an ancillary tool rather than an all-encompassing solution for editorial work.

“These figures actually show a very mature and cautious approach to AI use in Ukrainian journalism. As of now, AI is our amplifier, not an autopilot. This approach enables us to take the next leap, which will most likely also be process-based, not content-based — and this is very good. However, a third of those surveyed said that they did not use AI at all or used it very little (individual people in the teams). This suggests that news outlets lack appropriate training, there are no policies, and perhaps there is a fear of mistakes or scandals,” says IMI director Oksana Romaniuk.

*The study was conducted using a quantitative anonymous online survey method with a simple random sample of potential respondents — journalists and news outlet editors. A total of 193 responses from media professionals in all regions across Ukraine was received. Of those, 74.6% were women and 25.4% were men. The margin of error is up to 5%. The survey was conducted on 8 December 2025 through 5 January 2026.
