126 cases of violations of journalists' rights recorded in Ukraine since beginning of the year
126 cases of violations of journalists' rights have been recorded in Ukraine by the Institute of Mass Information since the beginning of the year.
Roman Golovenko, IMI Deputy Director, told it at a press conference on September 16, as Ukrinform reported.
"Since 2019, it’s impossible to say that the situation is changing significantly this or other way. If, for instance, in a whole within eight months in 2019 there were a total of 133 cases of violations of journalists' rights, last year they were 137, this year 126 they are a little bit less." , - Roman Golovenko said.
He noted that the most typical violation was obstruction to journalistic activity.
"It is not always associated with any violent assaults, but it is the most common thing. In 2019, there were 73 incidents of obstruction, in 2020, there were 75, and this year, 65 cases have been recorded," - added the deputy director of IMI.
According to him, in 2019, 25 cases of threats to journalists were identified, in 2020, 13 cases were identified and this year, over the period of eight months, 12 cases of threats to journalists were recorded, 16 cases of beatings recorded in 2019-, 14 cases in 2020 and 17 cases in 2021.
"I have to say that 2019 and 2020 were the years of elections, ie in such years, usually, more violations of journalists' rights are recorded than ever," Roman Golovenko stressed.
He added that since the beginning of the year, the Register of Judgments has listed seven sentences under Article 171 for obstruction to journalistic activity.
As IMI reported, on September 14, 2021, media and human rights NGOs and the Prosecutor General's Office signed a memorandum of understanding and cooperation.
The memorandum was signed by the Institute of Mass Information, the Crimean Human Rights Group, the Institute for Regional Press Development, the Human Rights Platform, Detector Media and the ZMINA Human Rights Center.
On May 25, IMI provided the Office of the Prosecutor General with a list of violations of journalists' rights for investigation and proposed to form a working group to achieve more progress of such investigations. The PGO has expressed its willingness to contribute to the investigations of the crimes against journalists..
In 2020, IMI recorded 229 cases of violations of freedom of speech were recorded by IMI experts in Ukraine (as of December 28 ). Of these, 171 cases involved physical aggression against journalists.
