Zhytomyr journalist turned UAF officer Bohdan Lysenko has been killed in action in Zaporizhzhia oblast. His son Anton Lysenko announced this in a Facebook post on May 8 and shared the details with Oksana Trokoz, the Institute of Mass Information representative in Zhytomyr oblast.

“My father came under enemy fire on April 13. All this time, we were hoping for the best. However, inexorable fate decided otherwise and he will be protecting us from heaven now,” wrote Anton Lysenko.

The Zhytomyr news websites Zhytomyr.city and 20 Khvylyn report that Bohdan Lysenko, known to readers under his penname Bogdan Lu, was born on March 24, 1966. His reporting included dozens of articles in both national and regional media outlets such as Fakty, KP v Ukraini, Subota, Ekho.

Bohdan Lysenko was present throughout the entire Revolution of Dignity from beginning to end. When the so-called “little green men” appeared in Crimea, Bohdan immediately went there as a journalist and reported on it. He later worked as a journalist in Donetsk oblast, where he was taken prisoner in 2014. Thanks to the work of volunteers, he was released in three days. He described his experiences during these three days in an article for the newspaper Fakty.

“My father began fighting for all of us and for his country back in 2014. Then, as a journalist, he was captured in occupied Donetsk. Fortunately, he was quickly released in a prisoner swap. Captivity did not break him: on the contrary, it became one of the motives for his continued fighting as part of a volunteer unit and later in the regular troops. During his entire service, my father published many incredible articles and essays about the fate and exploits of Ukrainian soldiers, which I will definitely share with you later,” wrote Anton Lysenko.

In a comment to the IMI representative, Anton Lysenko said that his father had served in the army for eight years.

“My father was a sniper and reconnaissance officer since signing a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He received his officer rank during the full-scale invasion. His last position was deputy company commander,” Anton Lysenko told the IMI.

The family will announce the date and place of the funeral later.
