The National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting registered the newspaper Vechirniy Kyiv as a subject in the print media field on April 25. Now it will be published by the Borys Hrinchenko University of Kyiv, according to the University's website.
"This is a big challenge and a great responsibility for us, and an important mission at the same time. After all, the existence of the print press is a European trend, and it is important that we provide our capital, with a population of about 3 million people and the seventh most populous city in Europe, with print media product," said Halyna Horbenko, dean of the Journalism Department at the Hrinchenko University.
The newspaper will be produced by students together with professors. The university promises that it will become a modern platform for creative experiments.
The first issue of Vechirniy Kyiv was published on December 21, 1905 (January 2, 1906 by the new style). The newspaper was subject to censorship for a long time and has been shut down by imperial and Soviet governments multiple times.
The University notes that the newspaper was giving voice to progressive thought even in the most difficult times: "Evening Conversations" by Maksym Rylskyi, published in Vechirniy Kyiv, is still a Ukrainian journalism classic, and these works are studied by journalism departments in universities.
Vechirniy Kyiv will have four issues a year and will report on issues that matter to the residents of the capital.
