Journalist Maria Yivzhenko was killed in a Russian attack on the Compass FM business centre in Kyiv on 25 September. She had previously worked at NV’s Business desk.
Maria’s death was reported in an Instagram post by her husband, servicemember Danylo Yivzhenko.
He said that the couple had been planning a future together. They had taken out a mortgage at the end of last year to buy an apartment, and had been planning to have a child the coming winter. They had also recently bought a car, so that Maria could get around the city more easily with their future child.

“The car burned down, Masha died. I’ve lost my best friend, my girlfriend, my wife, the mother of my future children who will never be,” Danylo wrote.
NV Business deputy chief editor Oleksandra Nekrashchuk said that Maria Yivzhenko had been a talented journalist and genuinely committed to explaining complex tech-related topics in an accessible way.

“She wrote about defence tech, Ukrainian IT, and the technologies changing the course of this war, explaining the most complicated things in simple terms, and she sincerely wanted to help her country. Her kindness and her smile will stay in the memory of everyone who had the honour of knowing her,” Nekrashchuk wrote.
Nekrashchuk added that Maria had decided to move into the corporate sector a few months earlier, but the two of them had stayed in touch. The day before the journalist’s death, they had been arranging to meet up.
According to the Institute of Mass Information, Maria Yivzhenko is the 138th media professional to die in the course of Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine.
