Social media are the most popular source of information among Ukrainians, but TV is the more trusted one – survey
The most popular source of information among Ukrainians in the last two months of the full-scale war is social media, mostly Telegram, YouTube and Facebook, but television is the most trusted one.
This is evidenced by a survey conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, commissioned by the OPORA Civic Network, Ukrinform reports.
“Social media have proved to be the most popular source of information in the last two months – 76.6% of Ukrainians use them to follow the news. Television ranked second with 66.7% of the votes, the Internet (social media excluded) is the third, with 61.2% of users. Currently, about 28.4% of Ukrainians listen to the radio, and only 15.7% of respondents read the printed media," OPORA reports.
Meanwhile, the largest number of respondents looking for news on social media in the last two months have been using Telegram (65.7%), YouTube (61.2%) and Facebook (57.8%). 48% of respondents use Viber, 29.1% use Instagram, 19.5% use TikTok, and 8.9% use Twitter. About 2% of respondents use other social media (WhatsApp, Signal, etc.) to follow the news.
At the same time, when asked what media they trust the most, 60.5% of Ukrainians have mentioned television, almost 54% – social media, and almost 49% – the Internet, social media excluded. Ukrainians express slightly less trust in the radio (34%) and printed media (23%). About 5% of respondents do not trust any of the sources of information.
The study was conducted from 3 to 26 May, 2022. 2009 respondents living in all regions of Ukraine (except the Autonomous Republic of Crimea) were interviewed by phone and using the computer; the poll was based on sample of random mobile phone numbers.
The statistical error of the sample does not exceed 2.4% for indicators close to 50%.
