Since the beginning of the year, IMI registered 224 violations of journalists' rights

16.09.2015, 17:30

For eight months of the current year, the Institute of Mass Information registered 224 facts of violation of journalists' rights. IMI expert Iryna Chulivska said this in her interview to Radio Liberty.

«Compared to 2014, we had four times fewer violations this year. One could think that the situation has improved, but in reality it was critical last year. What "224 violations registered" really means is almost every day in Ukraine a journalist or other mass media representative is beaten, threatened, or obstructed», Chilviska said.

According to her, of all cases of beatings, intimidation, assaults and pressure against journalists due to their professional activities, only three cases were brought to court and were investigated.

Also, the expert mentioned that most often the offenders in physical attacks against journalists are participants of traffic accidents, rally members, sometimes the attackers are judges, deputies or police officers.

The most risky locations for Ukrainian journalists are still Crimea and Donbas. The number of crimes in the occupied territories in the East reduced only because very few Ukrainian journalists even go there.
