Reuters filming crew affected by the Russian strike on a Kramatorsk hotel

25.08.2024, 12:53

A member of a Reuters filming crew covering the war in Ukraine has gone missing and two others have been hospitalized after a Russian strike on a hotel in Kramatorsk on the evening of August 24, Reuters reports.

According to the news agency, the Hotel Sapphire, where six people from the Reuters team stayed, was targeted "probably with a missile."

"Two of the our colleagues are being treated in hospital; one of them is seriously injured," the agency reports.

"The three other colleagues have been found. We are urgently seeking more information about the attack, including by working with the authorities in Kramatorsk, and we are supporting our colleagues and their families," the agency added.

According to the Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor's Office, journalists with a foreign media outlet, aged 38 and 40, were injured on the hotel's premises. They were diagnosed with a mine-explosive injury, brain contusion, leg fracture, concussion and cuts on the body. Another one is probably under the rubble.

Russian troops targeted Kramatorsk on August 24 at 10:35 p.m., probably with an "Iskander-M" missile, the prosecutors note.

The chair of the Donetsk Oblast Military Administration, Vadym Filashkin, said that all the victims were journalists, including citizens of Ukraine, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

"The next target in the city was a hotel – current reports say that two people were injured and one more person is under the rubble. All three victims are journalists, citizens of Ukraine, the US and the UK," he wrote.

The police have started a pre-trial investigation within proceedings forf violation of the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

The Russian attack damaged the hotel and residential buildings at the epicenter of it.

Search operations are underway. Rescuers and law enforcers are working on the ground.

The IMI has stated earlier that the Russian troops are targeting places where media workers gather, and has issued accommodation tips for journalists going on business trips.
