PEN Ukraine to writers worldwide: "We urge you to raise your voice and resist against the new tyrannies"

PEN Ukraine urged writers around the world not to remain silent, to appeal to their fellow citizens and governments to resist the new tyranny and to attract support for Ukraine, as written in the organization's address.

"In the increasing attack of the new tyrannies, Ukraine's continued fight for freedom sets an example of hope even when the values we cherish seem so fragile.

"We urge you to raise your voice. To speak to your people and governments. To mobilize resistance against the new tyrannies. To mobilize support for Ukraine," the organization says.

PEN Ukraine adds that nowadays "the dark times are around us."

"Freedom and dignity are being challenged from many places, often from unexpected sources. But we should not give up. Freedom is not a 'fact', it is a task. Dignity is not guaranteed, it emerges from a fight for it. Ukraine is not a 'problem' of the free world, but part of the solution," the organization notes.

On March 4, US President Donald Trump said he wanted to cut the federal funding of colleges that allow what he called "illegal protests" and to imprison or deport agitators.
