Online casinos rank among the top-3 commissioners of covert advertising – IMI analyst
Online casinos ranked among the top three commissioners of jeansa, and the general amount of covert gambling advertising in media increased significantly in the last quarter of the year, as of October 2023. Dmytro Barkar, the head analyst at the Institute of Mass Information, said this on the air of Ukrainske Radio.
According to the expert, the majority of online casino advertisements in popular Ukrainian media outlet are not labeled in any way. He noted that Ukrainian media earn more money by placing covert gambling ads in their news feeds than for content labeled "advertising".
"The top commissioners of covert advertising include five online casinos which are quite well-known. As a media expert, what pains me is not just that they capitalize on the war with their ads. They commission covert advertising and indirectly put pressure on the editors, with money, in particular, so that it their ads are placed in the news feeds specifically without the 'advertisement' label. They pay more for it, it is more expensive. If a media outlet places an 'advertising' label, they get less money. Ukrainian media are currently struggling, and businesses are taking advantage of this," said the IMI head analyst.
Earlier, the Institute of Mass Information released the study "Addiction Advertised. How the gambling business may harm the media", which finds that gambling businesses are capitalizing on the war to encourage gambling addiction among Ukrainians. It also showed that most of the gambling advertisements in the popular online media of Ukraine are not labeled in any way.
