Ombudsman's Office received 72 complaints from journalists, 32 cases directed to law enforcements

15.03.2017, 16:22

The Secretariat of the Commissioner received 72 requests from journalists and media workers with complaints on violation of the right for access to public information in 2016. The Secretariat gave this information on "Dostup do pravdy"  request.

The representative of the Commissioner - the head of department for preparation of the constitutional submissions and observance of the right for access to public information Iryna Kushnir noted that journalists is the least protected professional group on access to public information, the consideration of their complaints take much more time.

"Given the amendments to the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides strengthening responsibility for unlawful refusal to journalists, we have to send complaints to the police, that they decide whether there are criminal offenses. Only after the police decide that there is no criminal offense, we reopen the proceedings under the Code of Administrative Offences. This is delaying process of protection of journalists' rights,"- Kushnir said.
