National council wants to gain right to suspend or call off broadcast licenses without appealing to court

10.07.2019, 12:16
The National Council of Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine applied to the Parliament asking to grant it the right to suspend of call off the broadcast licenses in order to “prevent an anti-Ukrainian activity”, as to “Detektor Media”. The National council wants to extend its power to be able to react to next violations: -right to apply restrictive sanctions without verification -right to suspend of call off the broadcast license in some specified cases: *as the territorial integrity of Ukraine is contested; *propaganda of government bodies of the aggressor state; *inciting to hatred and use of hate language; *spreading of fake news. “At the moment, we  have to schedule an inspection, to conduct it and only after that to apply sanction. We are not enable to suspend license, we can do it only after issuing a warning and imposing a penalty we can apply to the court asking to call off the license, as Deputy Head of the regulator Uliana Feshchuk said. “We will appeal to the Verkhovna Rada asking that in case of violation of the article 6th of the Law on television and radio broadcasting the National council could quickly and efficaciously to counteract to these violations”. As Serhiy Kostynsky, another member of the National council, said, at the time when Ukraine’s mass media are used as a tool of Russian propaganda, the regulator has to obtain more extended power.
