The International Fund for Public Interest Media Council (IFPIM Council) ratified the supervisory board’s decision to include the NGO Institute for Mass Information (IMI) on its first meeting on 4 November.
IMI will represent the media ecosystem of the focus region Eastern Europe.
“As a Ukrainian civil society organization that systematically monitors freedom of speech, documents crimes against journalists, and develops, supports, and advocates for a high-quality media environment, IMI will now have an institutional voice in the global discussion on the funding and sustainability of public interest media. IMI’s membership in the IFPIM Council will allow us to stronger represent the Ukrainian experience in the shaping of global media support policies and programs: from supporting independent media outlets to systemic solutions for media ecosystems in the countries of our focus region,” said IMI director Oksana Romaniuk.
IFPIM is an independent international organization created in response to existential threats to public interest media; its mission is to boost the sustainable development of healthy media ecosystems, including through grant and technical support to independent media outlets. The Fund is based in France and operates on a non-profit basis. The IFPIM Board is co-chaired by Maria Ressa, Nobel Peace Prize winner, co-founder and CEO of Rappler; and Mark Thompson, Chairman, CEO and chief editor of CNN, former CEO of The New York Times Company.
