Hackers tried to steal gmail password of Rivne journalist

19.09.2017, 17:37
Journalist from Rivne Olha Ferar received a notification about an attempt to steal her gmail e-mail service password, “Chetverta Vlada” reports. “It is possible that government-supported abusers attempt to steal your password”, this was the message she received from Google on September 15 in the e-mail account of the Rivne website "VSE". Google advices the hardware owner to turn on the two-stage authentication and to set-up a security key.   The consultant for digital security Mykola Kostynian explained that such notifications started to appear in journalists' e-mails over two years ago. “Google shows it to everyone whose e-mail is under attack by hackers affiliated with governmental structures. I had the same about half a year ago. That is, Google cares and warns. They say – here are malefactors affiliated with the government,  they attack you. protect your account”, Mykola Kostynian commented. IMI expert for digital secturity Iryna Chulivska said that Ukrainian journalists and civil activists are indeed regularly under attack, as leaders of media organizations had such notifications from Google sent to them as a common occurrence about half a year ago. Google does not inform users how exactly they identify the attack. Yet if a journalist receives such notification, it is a good reason to improve the security of their account.
