The Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs will prepare and submit draft legislation on the introduction of a comprehensive exam for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.

The Cabinet of Ministers supported the according protocol request for fulfilling the President's assignment during their July 12 meeting, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced.

Moreover, the Ministry of Education and Science, together with the National Commission for State Language Standards, has been tasked with developing and approving exam programs for testing the fluency in the state language, the familiarity with Ukrainian history and the basics of the Constitution of Ukraine.

"Today, Ukrainian citizenship is a privilege. And everyone who applies for it must know and understand the fundamental principles of our country," Shmyhal noted.

As IMI reported, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to comprehensively review the issue of introducing a mandatory exam for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship as a response to a petition.

Petition No. 22/140008-ep "To introduce a mandatory exam for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship" was initiated by citizen Vitaly Kapustyan. It was registered on the President's website on May 23, 2022, and was signed by over 25,000 citizens.
