Deputy Prosecutor General proposes to criminalize defamation

20.03.2013, 04:13
Ukrainian First Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin has said he hopes that the criminal responsibility for defamation will be introduced in Ukraine. He wrote this in an article for Zakon I Biznes newspaper. “In order to solve the problem in practice, I believe it is necessary to introduce the article on defamation into the Code on Criminal offenses, the adoption of which is expected early in 2014”, Kuzmin stressed. He noted that his decision is based upon the analysis of articles on defamation included in criminal codes of European countries, and taking into account the problems of the Ukrainian legislative system operation.

He added that he personally suffered from defamation when he investigated cases against ex-Interior Minister Yuri Lutsenko and ex-P Yulia Tymoshenko. Kuzmin also pointed out that representatives of EU do not want “to understand problems of our country and to see the results of objective investigations of crimes, committed by Tymoshenko. Unfortunately, they also use defamation”, said Kuzmin.
