Companies and "Opposition Block-For Life" as main customers of jeansa in online media – IMI survey

05.12.2019, 14:43

The main customers of jeansa in online based mass media are commercial companies and business, which accounted for 24% of the total jeansa. This is evidenced by the survey held by the NGO "Institute of Mass Information" for October-November 2019 in 17 online mass media. The full sample was more than 20 thousand news *.

The party "Opposition Platform - For Life" took the second position with 18.1% of materials with signs of being paid-for.

The new anti-trend of the fourth quarter of 2019 was revealed: materials with signs of being paid-for, which targeted specific bills. An enormous amount of materials was posted online against bill No. 1210 (11.6% of the total number of materials with order signs) and against bill No. 2336-2 (7.9% of the total number of materials with order signs).

According to IMI experts, such a high percentage of counter-lobbying may indicate that some oligarchs and big companieswith one’s economic interests are behind it.

The oligarch Rinat Akhmetov was found out to be among the biggest customers of jeansa (8.6% of all materials with order signs covered DTEK, Ukrtelecom and Akhmetov Foundation) and car manufacturers (8.6% of jeans were in the "newest" and "most powerful" cars).

RBK-Ukraine (39 materials identified during the week the monitoring was held), "Obozrevatel" (31 material) and 112.ua and NewsOne (30 materials each) became anti-leaders as news portals, with signs of being paid-for materials.

No custom materials were found on the sites "Ukraynska Pravda", "Liga" and "Ukraynsky Tyzhden".

In general, only 8.2% of materials with order signs were conditionally marked as advertising. However, this marking is not in accordance with the law, so such materials have been considered as stories not duly marked.

The material was written on the basis of the monitoring conducted from October 21 to 25, 2019 in 17 popular Internet media: "Obozrevatel", "Znay.ua", The 24th Kanal, "Gordon", "Ukrainska Pravda", "Nooe Vremya”, UNIAN, “Sehodnya”, TSN, 112.ua, NewsOne, RBC.ua,“Liga”,“ Ukraynsky Tyzhden”, Interfax,“Strana”,“Censor”. The sample covers all news in a row that have been published on websites during the specified period (more than 20 thousand news).

This research was made possible by the support of the American people through the USAID Media Program in Ukraine implemented by the international organization Internews Network. The content of the material is under the sole responsibility of the NGO “Institute of Mass Information” and does not necessarily reflect the views of USAID, the US Government, or the Internews Network.
