Cultural figures, journalists, theater and art critics have created an award commemorating the journalist and theater critic Oleh Verhelis, who died on September 30, 2022, reports ZN.UA.

The award was created to honor Oleh Verhelis's memory and to continue his plight. The main goals will be to promote and support the art of theater with an emphasis on relevance, originality of stage form, and talent.

"The editor of the ZN.UA culture department was an extraordinary person with a broad outlook and expert erudition. He touchingly and sincerely valued talent and integrity, mercilessly mocked poor taste and phoniness in his colleagues. He kept his eye on all theaters of Ukraine. People would ask his advice, his ideas had been applied on stage in dozens of productions in Ukraine and even in Europe," the report reads.

Moreover, Oleh Verhelis supported the most prominent achievements of modern Ukrainian theater, celebrated young and creative players on the national stage, creating the independent theater award "Mirror of the Stage" in 2016.  However, the award was suspended in 2019 due to life circumstances.

The Oleh Verhelis Award will include a monetary prize. The winners will be announced on the eve of World Theater Day, March 26.
