Methodology of sources monitoring in the regional media

Regional online media outlets were being analyzed for adherence to standard of accuracy in the news. The monitoring was conducted since June 4, 2018. Sources of information were analyzed in first 100 news of the newsfeed of each media outlet without taking into account op-ed & analytical materials or investigations, and also, of materials with features suggesting they were commissioned, the format of which was not news. The news were analyzed based on the following indicators: Indicator 1. Reference to source of information: identified source of information - non-identified source of information. Indicator 2. Identified source of information – dubious source of information Indicator 3. Identified source of information: anonymous source of information Reliable sources of information included: self-references or references to official sources of information identified in the text, including references to reliable mass media, verified accounts in social networks, etc. Dubious information sources - sources where it is impossible to confirm if the journalists were present at the location of the event (in case of a self-reference), generalized references to «social networks», «eyewitnesses», «medics», «experts», «people», etc. Anonymous sources - were identified when source was reported as anonymous in the news, using a phrase like «from our/our own sources», «... did not wish to be named», etc. News without identified sources – when it is impossible to tell from the text of the news what was the source based on which the main fact of the news report was written.
