The Ukrainian media community is asking the European Commission to impose sanctions on all Russian TV channels.

The respective letter was addressed to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and Vera Jourova, Vice President of the European Commission, according to Detector Media.

Thus, the leading media groups of Ukraine, such as 1 + 1 media, StarLight Media, Media Group Ukraine, Inter Media Group, the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, NGO " Detector Media " and others have joined their efforts and requested:

  • To sanction all Russian TV channels with satellite or any other technology and to ban their broadcasting in the EU.
  • Instead of Russian TV channels, to recommend the providers to switch on Ukrainian television, which is now broadcasting the United News telethon, in English among other. The international community must have an uninterrupted access to objective and honest information about events in Ukraine.

"In their numerous stories, the Russian TV channels justify the Russian war in Ukraine, hide the real scale of hostilities and their own losses, discredit the government of Ukraine and international partners, by these actions they undermine democratic values and principles, cast doubts on freedom of speech as the basis of European values and generate a huge number of fake news, thus misleading viewers not only in Russia but also in the EU and the US. Moreover, Russians living in Russian federation soil and beyond its borders are orienting themselves to the reports spread by Russian media, and thus they are deprived  of an access to the objective information or at least an alternative point of view.

An important step towards reducing the influence of Russian propaganda, which is based on hate speech and disinformation, was the shutdown of RT and Sputnik channels in Western and Eastern Europe and western Russia. However, the influence of other channels controlled by the aggressor state that are still present on European satellites - RT News, RTR Planeta, Rossiya 24, NTV Mir, Soyuz, 8 kanal International, Pobeda International, 1 Kanal Europa, RT France - also has a devastating effect on information security of the whole world, because the editorial policy of such channels is completely controlled by the state, which is why these media are mouthpieces of Russian propaganda. At the same time, not all European companies are in a hurry to stop cooperating with Russian counterparts in the field of relaying of these Russian propaganda media, as practically all civilized world does now”, the letter reads.

At the same time, the authors of the letter call on all concerned journalists, representatives of public organizations, the media community from around the world to join the signatories of the open letter. You can do this by sending a request to [email protected].

The full text of the letter can be found in the document at this link .
