The health of Crimean journalist Dmytro Shtyblikov, unlawfully detained and sentenced to 19.5 years by Russian authorities, has significantly deteriorated, his daughter Tetyana Shtyblikova told the Crimean Human Rights Group.

She said that her father had recently been moved from the cell-type facility (a kind of strict isolation colony) where he had been detained for almost seven years to a high security section in colony No. 6 in Omsk region (Russia).

Since the transfer there had been communication issues, Tetyana Shtyblikova said.

“We used to get a letter from my father every two weeks, then there was a 1.5 months silence, and only recently did we receive another letter. As for medical care and health: the medicines we sent him are kept in storage and not given to my father. They come up with new rules every time. One package per half a year is allowed. His chronic illnesses are getting worse. Without proper examination, this can develop into more serious conditions,” Shtyblikova said.

Dmytro Shtyblikov is a Ukrainian journalist and public activist, former deputy chief editor with the magazine Chornomorska Bezpeka. He has contributed to Ukrainian, Russian, and Western media outlets. Detained in the Russian-occupied Crimea in 2016. Charged with espionage and preparing for sabotage.

On 27 April 2022, the Southern District Military Court judge Kirill Kryvtsov sentenced Dmytro Shtyblikov to 19 years and 6 months in prison.

Shtyblikov is serving his sentence in FPS colony No. 6 in Omsk region, Russia.

According to the Institute of Mass Information, Russia committed 950 crimes against journalists and the media in Ukraine in the four years and three months since the start of the full-scale war. Dmytro Shtyblikov is on the list of Ukrainian journalists detained by Russia.
