Sushchenko and Semena became candidates for UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize - 112.ua

07.02.2019, 18:06
Roman Sushchenko and Mykola Semena, the Ukrainian reporters and political prisoners of Russia are now the candidates for UNESCO's Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize. Ukrinform news agency reported that, quoting Emine Dzhaparova, the first deputy of information policy of Ukraine, TV channel 112.ua reported. The official said this, presenting the English edition of Semena's book called 'Crimean Story'. According to her, a country can only choose three people to nominate for this prize. 'We don't know if they get this award, but even nominations of these reporters is the sign of our support for these people who now stay in detention', Dzhaparova said. Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was created in 1997. It honours a person, organization or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger. The prize, worth UD 45,000, is awarded each year on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day on 3 May. The prize is named after Guillermo Cano Isaza, the editor of the Colombian newspaper El Espectador, who was murdered in Bogotá on 17 December 1986. Cano was a vocal critic of the country's powerful drug barons. Each year, an independent jury of 14 news professionals selected by the UNESCO Director-General selects a winner from the many nominations submitted by non-governmental organizations working in the field of press freedom, and by the UNESCO Member States. Roman Sushchenko was detained in Russia in September 2016 and charged with 'espionage'. Mykola Semena is accused of extremism for allegedly undermining the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation in the annexed Crimea. 112.ua
