Soldier, former media worker Oleksandr Mashlay killed in action
Soldier Oleksandr Mashlay, who had been the chief editor for the socio-political newspaper and later magazine "Pravyi Postup" for a long time, was killed in action in the Avdiivka area.
His brother Ihor Hoshovsky announced Oleksandr's death on Facebook.
Oleksandr Mashlay died on May 7, 2024. He served in the separate assault battalion No. 25; he took part in the Robotyne offensive last summer, and had been defending the Avdiivka coke-chemical plant and then Berdychi without breaks or rotation since October.
Oleksandr Mashlai has been a member of the NGO "National Alliance" since 2005.
The socio-political media outlet "Pravy Postup" was in print approximately from 2005 to 2010, said deputy Ihor Huz, ex-head of the National Alliance, to the IMI representative in Volyn oblast.
"There were approximately 10 issues of the newspaper 'Pravyi Postup', and then, on Oleksandr's initiative, it was reformatted into a magazine. Some issues were even converted into PDF. The magazine had a glossy cover. It was an interesting outlet, but for various reasons it had no more than 20 issues," he said.
Some of the archived numbers are available on "Chtyvo". It was an outlet of a nationalist orientation. For example, one of the 2010 issues was about Roman Shukhevych.
Ihor Huz also added that Oleksandr Mashlay was a good layout designer. He helped many media outlets with this.
According to Huz, Oleksandr Mashlay also worked as a freelancer and provided layout, graphic design services for newspapers and various outlets.
"Plast Volyn" noted on Facebook that at the start of Russia's full-scale invasion Oleksandr Mashlay volunteered for the army. He served as a junior sergeant in the separate assault battalion No. 25 of the separate mechanized brigade "Magura" No. 47, where he worked in providing communications. He was the designer of his battalion's badge.
Oleksandr Mashlay was a co-organizer and permanent board member of the festival "Banderstat" in Lutsk.
He died while performing a combat mission near Zhelanne village, Ocheretyne community, Pokrovsk district, Donetsk oblast.
Oleksandr is survived by his wife and two sons.
According to the Institute of Mass Information, Oleksandr Mashlay is the 80th media worker to die as a result of Russia's aggression against Ukraine.
The IMI monitors Russia's crimes against the media and journalists in Ukraine. In the two years since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has committed 567 crimes against journalists and the media in Ukraine.
