Serviceman Oleksandr Nazarenko, aged 56, was killed in action in Sumy oblast on 26 August. He was chair of the Chernihiv branch of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine and chief editor of the Mena-based newspaper Nashe Slovo.
Oleksandr Nazarenko’s death was reported by the newspaper Vist.
According to the outlet, Nazarenko served in the territorial defence forces as chief sergeant and ran a CIMIC support unit. He died near Novodmytrivka in Sumy oblast at around 3pm.
“Oleksandr said he was not feeling well. They called for evacuation. He didn’t make it to the hospital,” the team stated.
Oleksandr Nazarenko was an Honoured Journalist of Ukraine and chair of the Regional Media Association. He was drafted into the Defence Forces in October 2025.
According to the Institute of Mass Information, Oleksandr Nazarenko is the 135th media professional to die in the course of Russia’s aggressive war in Ukraine.
