Parliament rejected report on Medvedchuk’s TV channels

On June 17, the Verkhovna Rada rejected the report of the Provisional Investigatory Commission aiming to verify, whether the law has been infringed by change of owners of news TV channels and whether the propaganda influence of the Russian Federation has been counteracted.

191 MPs voted for the resolution №3363, as Ukrinform reported.

“The Provisional Investigatory Commission held seven meetings to probe into issues related to its powers... Executives of NewsOne, 112 Ukraine, ZIK TV channels, a lawyer of 112 Ukraine TV channel and the ultimate beneficial owner of three TV channels were repeatedly invited to the Commission meeting. MP Kozak Taras Romanovych, who ignored the invitation of the Commission dated February 7, 2020 and did not provide explanations on the inquired issues, ”the report reads.

The commission informs that as of the date of its report, the Chief Investigator of the Security Service of Ukraine is conducting a pre-trial investigation into criminal proceedings, which investigates the organization of the TV link on July 12, 2019, scheduled with the participation of citizens of Ukraine and Russia between NewsOne and Russia 1 ”, eventual involvement of the beneficial owners of NewsOne TV channel in financing the Russian defense complex, the origin of funds which MP Kozak employed to acquire corporate rights of News 24 Hours LLC (NewsOne), the circumstances of his acquisition of corporate rights of 112 Ukraine TV channel group. and ZIK, as well as illegal seizure in 2016 of the corporate rights of a group of companies of the TV channel "112 Ukraine".

As IMI reported, on April 17, 2020, the draft resolution №3363 "On the report of the Provisional Investigatory Commission of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine aiming to verify compliance with the law during the change of owners of news channels and counteracting the informational influence of the Russian Federation" was published on the Verkhovna Rada's website .

On October 17, 2019, the Verkhovna Rada established such a commission in order to investigate information on compliance with the law during the change of owners of information TV channels and to ensure counteraction to the information influence of the Russian Federation. 

It will be recalled that TV channels 112 Ukraine, ZIK and NewsOne belong to Viktor Medvedchuk's close associate Taras Kozak.
