Only 5% of journalists file petition against law enforcing agencies closing their cases

21.10.2017, 16:03
Only 5% of journalists appeal against law enforcement agencies closing cases where they were the victims, this was the data made public by Oleksandr Sasevych, member of the Council of Judges of Ukraine on October 19, at the international conference “Counteraction to threats to life and safety of journalists. Effective investigation of crimes against freedom of expression of opinions”. According to his data, since the beginning of 2016, only 11 sentences were produced by the court under "journalist articles", of them 5 were sentences of acquittal. Also, at the conference, moderated by the executive director of IMI Oksana Romaniuk, there was an interesting information from the prosecutor Олександр Єгоров (department for overseeing pre-trial investigations).  He reported that since the beginning of 2017, 18 cases on obstruction to journalists' activities were investigated and filed to the court by the prosecutor's office.
