NewsOne and 112th TV channels qualify decision of NSDC as political pressure

22.03.2019, 12:04
The TV channels 112th and NewsOne made public statements saying the decision of theNational security and defense council to conduct verifications as to possible terroristic activity of TV channels is political pressure, as to Interfax-Ukraine. In his statement the director general of the TV channel 112-Ukraine Ehor Benkendorf required from the authority to cease persecution of the TV channel and to act within the limits of the law and to respect freedom of speech as it is guaranted by the Constitution. “We consider the decision of the National security and defense council that commissioned the Security Service of Ukraine to fulfil verification of the TV channels on alleged involvement in “terrorist activities” as direct and blattant political pressure onto our TVchannels as independent mass media. This is an attempt to intimidate us before election and in case of our refusal to pave the way to shut down the channel”. In its turn, the statement made by the NewsOne said they consider this measure as direct pressure onto freedom of speech ahead of the presidential election. “We also appeal to society and to ourinternational partners asking to back our TV channel”, as Vasyl Golovanov, producer general of NewsOne told. IMI informed on October 4th, 2018 the Verkhovna Rada adopted a resolution suggesting to impose sanctions against the TV channels 112 and NewsOne due to “anti-Ukrainian activity” of these TV channels.
