National council fined 15 radio stations for almost 634 thousand hryvnias total for violations of language quotas

20.09.2017, 00:53
National council for the issues of television and radio broadcasting in half a year fined 15 radiostatsions for almost 634 thousand hryvnias for violation of language quotas. This was reported by the head of the national council Yuriy Artemenko on September 19 at the press conference in Kyiv, Ukrinform reports. “In the last half of the year we registered only 15 violations of the law, which entailed fines with a total amount 634 thousand hryvnias. Because the fine for failure to comply with quotas is 5% from the amount of the license fee, radio stations try to overperform reguarding quotas not to violate the law unintentionally”, Artemenko explained. The largest fine, equal to 215.6 thousand hryvnias, was the one charged to the radio station “KISS FM”, where the share songs in Ukrainian was 24%, while the lowest threshold established by the law is 25%. As to violation in the law for not using the official language for broadcasted programs, the largest amount of the fee was used for the radio station of Odesa “Radio GLAS” - 43.2 thousand hryvnias. At that, Artemenko emphasized that the regulating authority acts strictly according to the law in every case of offence. Even if the violation of quota is as small as 0,1%. “This was the very reason we were able to secure implementation of the law by all licensees. Each violation was an exception of a kind, mostly due to technical reasons”, head of the National Council said.
