Kharkiv journalist claims about threats of local Mayor

30.01.2013, 23:50
Well-known Kharkiv journalist Serhiy Potimkov made an official statement that Kharkiv Mayor Gennady Kernes threatened him because of his professional activities. Potimkov said this in “Ya – Proty” program  of local television. The journalist claimed that on the evening of January 24, 2013, the Kharkiv Mayor approached him in the street near the local theater and threatened him, pressing to stop journalist professional activities. One of the Mayor’s guards also threatened the journalist by saying “You were warned!” The threats were voiced in presence of journalist’s friends, who witnessed the incident.

Potimkov, in his turn, warned the Kharkiv Mayor about his responsibility for threats: "If something happens to me or my beloved ones soon, he (Gennady Kernes - Ed.) will be held responsible. "

According to head of the Department for Information and Media Relations of the Kharkiv city council Yuri Sidorenko, the city council has no plans to somehow respond to the journalist’s statement. The official believes the journalist’s allegations are baseless. "Sergei Potimkov is not busy with any activities in Kharkiv - neither journalist nor public, nor political. Therefore, his statement about threats "to stop his activities" seems to me rather strange "- said Yuri Sidorenko to Telekritika.

Sergei Potimkov used to be national deputy of Ukraine in two parliaments, and is an Honored Journalist of Ukraine.
