Journalist suffered armed assault in Mykolayiv city

Sunday, October 16 Oleksandr Vlashenko, journalist of the local news-paper “Nash gorod Nikolaev” and web-site “Novosti-N.mk.ua, suffered an armed assault in Mykolayiv.
Assailant shot the journalist with a firearm in the head and also took away his bag in which Oleksandr had an editorial «Nikon» camera and two mobile phones.
A passerby called the police at the journalist’s request. An attempt to find the robber hot on traces was unsuccessfull. Lenin Regional Department of Internall Affairs in Mykolaiv city initiated a criminal case under Art. "Robbery".
Anatolii Onofriychuk chief editor of "Nash gorod Nikolaev» gave his comments to IMI. Answering the question, if he associates the attack on the journalist with his professional activity, he said: "Recently Vlaschenko has been writing articles about corruption among local authorities, so it is probably connected to his journalistic activities."
IMI appealed to law-enforcement authorities with the request to provide a public report on the investigation of this case and inform the public about the motives of this crime. Institute of Mass Information points out that such cases indicate deterioration of freedom of speech in Ukraine.
