International Insurance Fund for Journalists to open applications in May
The International Insurance Fund for Journalists (IIFJ) will be accepting applications from Ukrainian journalists, fixers, photo/video camerapeople performing editorial tasks in combat zones, announces the Association "Independent Regional Publishers of Ukraine", which implements the project.

Who can get the insurance?
Fixers, journalists / videographers / editors / photographers with independent Ukrainian outlets who are being sent on business trips to combat areas, liberated territories, areas bordering with Russia and Belarus, frontline areas and have safety gear. Priority is given to those who have completed safety training and first aid courses.
How to apply?

What is the validity period?
1 to 20 days per one journalist and one cameraperson / editor / photographer who are part of one crew going on a business trip.
Who decides which applications are granted?
The project's independent body – the IIFJ Coordination Council – reviews each application and decides whether to grant or decline it.
In case of a positive decision, our coordinators will contact you. Due to the large number of applications, the organizers reserve the right not to notify the applicant in case of a rejection.
We accept applications from journalists with those media outlets that are honest and adhere to the Code of Journalistic Ethics.

What is covered by the insurance?
The insurance covers up to $100,000 for medical expenses in the event of an injury. In case of the journalist's death, their family receives $100,000.

The International Insurance Fund for Journalists is an initiative of six NGOs: AIRPU, "Souspilnist" Foundation, IMI, "Detector Media", CEDEM, RPDI.
Starting from 2022, the project has been operating with financial support from partners – the European Center for Press and Media Freedom ECPMF and WAN-IFRA.
Since May 2024, the project has been resumed thanks to: European Center for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), Federal Foreign Office Germany, Voices of Ukraine as part of Hannah-Arendt-Initiative.
Throughout 2022 and 2023, the International Insurance Fund for Jorunalists processed 298 applications from media workers for 886 insurance days. The insurance covers up to $100,000. There have been no incidents that warranted insurance in the time that the project has existed.
