In Zhytomyrska oblast, journalist beaten who was fighting illegal mining of amber

In the evening of July 10, in the town of Olevsk in Zhytomyrska oblast, three unidentified men brutally beat the activist, journalist and deputy of Olevsk town council Oleksander Nikolaichuk, who is known for combating against illegal amber mining in Olvevskiy rayon, Radio Svoboda informs.

In the evening, at about eight, he was returning home from the meeting held by the oblast administration head, Mashkovskyi. An automobile, Ford Fiesta, suddenly cut off his way, and three men got out of it, one of them armed with iron rod. They took the journalist to the ground and started beating him. He sustained heaviest injuries from the iron rod. The journalist was diagnosed with a broken finger, concussion, multiple bruises, and had to get stitches in two spots. His friends moved him from a local hospital immediately after he was treated for fear of criminals finding him there.
