Hukov is accused of stealing firearms

02.07.2014, 23:33

Yuri Hukov, a journalist from Alchevsk (Luhanska oblast), who writes under a pen name Yuri Aseyev, has been under arrest for a week now. He is kept in the solitary cell in the HQ of the Aidar Batallion in the village of Polovinkine, Starobilsky rayon, Luhansk oblast. According to Oleksiy Svetikov, the head of Luhansk obalst branch of the Committee of Voters of Ukraine, Yury Hukov joined the Aidar batallion as a volunteer and gave a solemn oath. As a possible reason for his detainment it was said that he opposed his comrades torturing a captured separatist gunman, who later died due to the sustained wounds.

Initially Hukov was not allowed to see a lawyer or his family members.

But according to the Aidar batallion, Hukov committed a military crime: he is said to have stolen some firearms. The investigation is ongoing; he was provided with a lawyer.

Currently Hukov has been released from the solitary cell, but he is still kept on the territory of the army base. He said he has not eaten anything in eight days.
