“Frontline and Investigative Reporting Media in Ukraine” (FAIR Media Ukraine), a new EU-funded project designed to support independent frontline and investigative journalism media across Ukraine, has started, as per an Internews International press release.

The project will last two years, has a budget of 3 million euros, and is implemented by Internews International in partnership with the Media Development Foundation (MDF). Internews has been supporting the development of the independent media sector in Ukraine since 1993, and MDF has extensive experience in media research, providing mentoring support, and building the capabilities of regional news outlets.

Benefits for Ukrainian media

This project offers Ukrainian media the following benefits:

  • grants for institutional support that will help them continue to provide critical, life-saving information to local communities, especially vulnerable groups who trust local, reliable sources of information;
  • access to mentoring support, specialized training, and expert consultations from MDF to build their capabilities for sustainable development;
  • investigative reporting teams across Ukraine will receive institutional support that will allow them to continue working on investigations that promote government transparency at all levels, support the establishment of justice, expose corruption in state bodies, and document Russian war crimes.

FAIR Media Ukraine is one of three new EU projects launched this year. The other two projects are “Strengthening the Sustainability of an Independent, Free and Pluralist Media Ecosystem in Ukraine”, implemented by Reporters Without Borders, and “Empowering Ukrainian Media for a Sustainable Future”, implemented by the Institute of Mass Information (IMI).

FAIR Media Ukraine will help independent Ukrainian media continue to play a key role in informing the public and promoting integrity in public life.

Through direct financial support, comprehensive training and mentoring programmes, the project will ensure the survival of critically important independent media outlets, boost their operational capacity and financial self-sufficiency, improve the quality of investigative journalism, and help media outlets deliver reliable, verified and evidence-based news to Ukrainian citizens.
