EU declared its support to independence of Public broadcaster in Ukraine
Deputy Head of Delegation of the EU to Ukraine Rémy Duflot expressed support of EU to the Public Broadcaster in Ukraine. He said it during online discussion organized by the Institute of Mass Information “Press Freedom. Ukrainian context”.
“A very positive development is the improved funding situation at the Public Broadcaster and I would like to underline the vital role that a truly independent, capable and adequately funded Public Broadcaster can play as part of strong democratic institutions”< as R2;y Duflot said.
He noted, EU welcomed that Ukraine has been advancing in terms of freedom of expression and freedom of media, which has also been instrumental in promoting democratic reform and fighting corruption.
“Ukraine went down one place in the RSF's World Press Freedom Index rating: from 96 (in 2020) to 97, out of 180 countries. It still remains in the top-100 countries. But, as many media professionals agree, much more is needed to loosen the oligarchs’ tight grip on the media, encourage editorial independence and combat impunity for crimes of violence against journalists”, as the EU official said.
