CJE revealed 82 violations of professional ethics in media during election

21.05.2019, 18:32
The Commission on journalism ethics revealed 82 violations of the Ukraine’s Code of Journalism Ethics during presidential election campaign from January to April 2019. Andriy Kulikov, head of the Commission on Journalism Ethics, said it at the round table "Presidential Election Campaign in Ukrainian Media," on May 20th, as Ukrinform reported. "The awareness of those who vote, their ability to resist manipulations and, finally, to make well-grounded decisions to a large extent depends on impartiality, honesty, and accuracy of our work. We need to be balanced in our work so our audience knew that they have the right to dispose of their votes as they think best, and not to do somersaults in their electoral preferences every time different, depending on what story they read, "said Kulikov. He noted that the way the journalists cover the election does directly affect the behavior of those who vote or don’t vote, and thus, it determines our common future life. “We must be not indifferent in our work: this indifference should be in fulfilling our professional duties in compliance with professional standards. The experience we gained while conducting this monitoring will be usefull not later than this autumn: at the parliamentary elections. Naturally, we could wish there were no need to hold such monitoring, since everything would be fair, perfect. But, in fact, if we want this would happen, this monitoring is indispensable, "Kulikov said.
