Canada and UK to host media conference in July in London

27.02.2019, 13:45
Canada and United Kingdom are going to co-host a media freedom conference in London on July 10 and 11, 2019, as the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland announced it, as to Global Affairs Canada web-site. “In any democracy, journalists must have the ability to report facts freely, to defend, expose and advance the truth without fear of retaliation, reprisal, violence or imprisonment. Canada will always defend this right. We are very pleased to co-host this conference with the United Kingdom, and we look forward to joining all participants in London later this year,” she said. Journalists, civil society and governments will be invited to participate in two days of discussions about press freedom and the importance of defending the media against censorship, imprisonment, personal attacks and abuse. One should remind that over the last 12 years, UNESCO has recorded over 1,000 killings of journalists worldwide. Impunity for killings of journalists remains extremely high. In 2018, IMI revealed 235 facts of violations to press freedom in the non-occupied territory of Ukraine. Department of Global Affairs of Canada
