On July 8th, International Media Law Summer School starts in Kyiv

On July 8-26th, an intensive three-weeks educative course for lawyers "International Media Law Summer School" held by the Center for Democracy and Rule of Law is going to take place in Kyiv. The summer school will focus on issues of freedom of speech and information, protection of honor, dignity and business reputation, media functionning, regulation of television and radio broadcasting, regulation of other aspects of activities of mass media. Lawyers whose work is related to freedom of speech, freedom of information or media law are invited to attend the course. Lawyers who work in the mass media or consult journalists, lawyers working for NGOs, authorities, barristers could apply as well. Applications are also accepted from senior students of law schools (starting from the 3rd year) and graduates who are interested in the issues of this Summer School. Lectures will be held in Russian. Several lectures will be held in English with consecutive interpretation. The training course covers the following topics: -Freedom of speech: American and European agenda; -European Convention on Human Rights; -European Court of Human Rights procedures of judicial recourse; -UN human rights committee application procedures; -Freedom of information, access to information; -Appeals on protection of honor, dignity and business reputation (defamation); -Exemption of liability for defamation; -Protection of privacy and personal data; --Protection of source as journalist’s right; -Specificities of regulation in printed press and web-based editions; -Broadcast licensing; -European standards of public broadcasting; -Professional unions and self-regulation of journalists; -Specificities of regulation of Internet; -Law on public moral protection; -Specificities of mass media activity in the period of election campaign etc. The Summer School program in 2019 will be similar to the programs of the previous years.
